Small Games of Chance Bill Would Support Social Clubs

My newly introduced legislation, House Bill 1050, would expand the options used by fraternal, social and veterans clubs conducting small games of chance. It also would increase prize limits and allow clubs to retain more of the revenue.

Nuclear Caucus Eyes 2025-26 Work

The bipartisan, bicameral Pennsylvania Nuclear Energy Caucus heard today from stakeholders in the nuclear industry. We have an ambitious agenda for the 2025-26 session as we seek to support the expansion of baseload power in Pennsylvania.

Checks are in the Mail for Money Match Program Recipients

The Pennsylvania Money Match initiative, which automatically returns certain unclaimed property from the state, is disbursing more than $1.7 million to its rightful owners this week.

According to Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity, 7,380 checks are being issued in this first round of the Money Match program. In May, as many as 40,000 additional checks could be issued to single owners of unclaimed property valued at up to $500, following a thorough identification and verification process.

This program was made possible by the bipartisan passage of Senate Bill 24, which was signed into law as Act 81 of 2024.

Pennsylvanians are encouraged to check the state’s unclaimed property database for any property valued at more than $500 that may be owed to them. A more formal claim process must be followed to have that property returned.

You need not pay anyone to help reunite you with property that belongs to you. For assistance with an unclaimed property claim, please contact my office at 717-534-1323.

Holding Health Insurers Accountable

A group of bipartisan lawmakers came together this week to introduce a bill affecting health insurance claims overturned on appeal.

House Bill 966 would hold health insurance companies accountable if they systematically fail to reimburse Pennsylvanians receiving medically necessary care. It would require health insurers to issue a public report on the frequency of rejected claims that are overturned on appeal and pay escalating fines if more than 50% of their claim denials are overturned on appeal.

I am frequently hearing from constituents concerned about not having access to the treatments and procedures their doctors say are necessary. It is important for insurance companies to see the person, not the paperwork.

The legislation has been referred to the PA House Insurance Committee.

New Turnpike Texting Service Launched

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PA Turnpike) has officially launched a new text messaging service, offering customers real-time communication during unexpected traffic backlogs.

This service is free, available 24/7 and designed only for PA Turnpike customers experiencing unexpected backlog. By texting “info” to 47676, drivers receive automated, location-specific information about the incident, anticipated clearance times and roadway updates.

Here’s how it works: While at a complete stop in a location where it is safe to remain stationary, through hands-free devices and voice command, or through a passenger in the car, text “info” to 47676. Users will be walked through prompts to verify their backlog location using GPS. Once confirmed, the service provides automated updates every 15-20 minutes, including what happened, how long it will take to clear and other roadway updates. Texts stop after an incident clears. To reactivate the service for a new incident, text 47676 again. This is not used for daily commuter traffic or constructed-related delays.

Turnpike officials also remind drivers that Paul Miller’s Law goes into effect in June, prohibiting the use of hand-held mobile devices while driving. Drivers are expected to follow this and all other applicable laws and regulations related to the use of mobile devices in vehicles.

Hanover Shoe Farms Strengthens Racing, State Economy

A tour of Hanover Shoe Farms this week showed lawmakers how the standardbred breeding farm, which dates its origins to the early 1900s, prepares high-quality horses for harness racing. The business employs 80 employees and has almost 3,600 acres in farmland preservation.

Middletown Fire Celebrates Volunteerism

Last week, Middletown Volunteer Fire Department recognized its oldest living member, Charles “Gravy” Krupilis Sr., during its black-tie banquet. The banquet was a nice time to celebrate volunteerism and community service.

Bishop McDevitt Football Lauded in House

On Monday, the Bishop McDevitt High School football team joined us in the Capitol to be commended on its District 3 Class 5A championship. The Crusaders have won three state titles. The team visited with Reps. Nate Davidson, Joe Kerwin, Justin Fleming, Dave Madsen and me.

3.21 For Life

The ever-growing 3.21 for Life events in Dauphin County are helping to spread awareness of Down syndrome and raise money for families affected by diagnoses with the genetic disorder. I greatly enjoyed visiting with families at Troegs Independent Brewing in Derry Township.
