In December 2021, Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin) introduced legislation that would name Hershey’s Kisses the state candy of Pennsylvania. He drafted
House Bill 2150 in partnership with teenagers from Council Rock School District.
House Bill 2150 would add Hershey’s Kisses to the list of state symbols, which includes mountain laurel as the state flower, white-tailed deer as the state animal, and, as of 2019, the Eastern hellbender as the state amphibian.
A class at Newtown Middle School started the project to seek designation for Hershey’s Kisses while learning about civics. Those students are now high-schoolers, but they have continued to advocate for the project and created
thekiss4pa.org to promote it.
House Bill 2150 is before the House State Government Committee.
