Mehaffie Announces Infrastructure Grant for Derry Township

HARRISBURG – A $553,450 grant awarded this week to Derry Township will help improve the flow of traffic in and around Hershey’s world-class entertainment, healthcare, hospitality and historical spaces, according to Rep. Tom Mehaffie (R-Dauphin).

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Green Light-Go Program seeks to reduce congestion and make roads safer for motorists and pedestrians. It awarded $38 million in grants to 86 municipalities across the state.
Derry Township’s funding will be used for controller and detection upgrades at the following intersections:

• Governor Road/Fishburn Road/Hockersville Road.
• East Governor Road/West Governor Road/Cocoa Avenue.
• Governor Road and Homestead Road
• Fishburn Road and Cocoa Avenue.
• East Chocolate Avenue/West Chocolate Avenue/Cocoa Avenue/Park Avenue.
• Chocolate Avenue and:
   o University Drive.
   o Hockersville Road.
   o Ridge Road.
   o Linden Road.
   o Homestead Road.

“Derry Township has millions of visitors every year because of the numerous attractions and events that take place in Hershey,” Mehaffie said. “Ensuring that our roads and intersections are safe are critical to our community, and this funding will help protect drivers and pedestrians.”

Applicants to the Green Light-Go Program commit a percentage of matching dollars to upgrade existing traffic signals through measures like installing light-emitting diode (LED) technology and retiming control systems.
